So, I’ve gotta admit: Up until recently, any knowledge I had about Fiddler on the Roof came solely from old movie clips and that episode of Gilmore girls where the elementary school puts on a stage production of the famed musical (you know the one!). I was pretty sure there were lots of hats, beards, some “Step In Time”-style dancing, and a guy who went by the name of Tevye. And for some reason, they were all singing about tradition.

Well, friends, the naiveté ends here, because I’ve got the scoop on Fiddler on the Roof AND the upcoming Detroit engagement of the Tony Award-nominated revival, now on tour! Read on if you want the deets on this show and when/where/how to see it when it comes to Detroit.

A little trivia for ya: Before it went to Broadway in 1964, the world premiere of Fiddler on the Roof actually took place in 1963 at Detroit’s Fisher Theatre! The story of fathers and daughters, husbands and wives, and life and love has since become synonymous with the Broadway stage, striking a chord with classic hits like “If I Were A Rich Man,” “Matchmaker, Matchmaker,” and “Tradition.” Fiddler on the Roof was also the first musical in history to surpass 3,000 performances and holds numerous Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

Originally from the minds of Tony-Award winner Joseph Stein and Pulitzer Prize-winners Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick, Fiddler on the Roof is directed by Tony Award-winner Bartlett Sherr, choreographed by acclaimed Israeli choreographer Hofesh Shechter, inspired by the original choreography of Jerome Robbins, and features musical direction by Ted Sperling. The cast of the North American Tour will feature multiple return performances, including one from Israeli theatre, film, and TV star Yehezkel Lazarov as Tevye.
