[Disclosure: This post is written in collaboration with Broadway in Detroit. Personal stories and opinions are my own.]

My first experience with The Phantom of the Opera goes back to high school, when the film adaptation with Emmy Rossum and Gerard Butler brought the production to life for those (myself included) who hadn’t yet experienced the stage version. I remember watching the movie in band class, performing “The Music of the Night” in clarinet quartets, and imitating the Phantom with my sister while we each covered one eye and pretended to jam the musical’s title track on an imaginary organ keyboard. I was really cool back then.

Up until the past few years, I kind of put Phantom on the back burner, knowing it was one of those productions every Broadway lover should see live, but not realizing that the stage version was still going strong in present-day theatreland. Of course, Broadway in Detroit knew better.

Based on the classic novel Le Fantôme de L’Opéra by Gaston Leroux, The Phantom of the Opera tells the story of a masked figure who lurks beneath the catacombs of the Paris Opera House, exercising a reign of terror over all who inhabit it. He falls madly in love with an innocent young soprano, Christine, and devotes himself to creating a new star by nurturing her extraordinary talents and employing all of the devious methods at his command.
