The year we moved to Michigan was a tough one, yet exciting in so many ways. As a girl who’s always loved musical theater and the glitz of city life, I’d experienced my share of live shows and had even seen a real Broadway production in New York City. Because I lived far outside of any major metropolitan area, however, the idea of having regular access to professional-level musical theater was a foreign concept to me.

Cue our move to metro Detroit, and my first brush with Broadway in Detroit. The first December Brad and I lived here, we treated ourselves to see WICKED at the Detroit Opera House. It was amazing and magical and everything I had hoped it’d be. Even better, actually, because if you’ve never seen WICKED live, there are some awesome special effects you just don’t get from listening to the soundtrack alone.

Needless to say, when I heard WICKED was making its way back to Detroit this summer, all of those memories came flooding back. The widely-adored musical has been back to town at least once or twice since we first saw it, and given its popularity, it’s not surprising that fans and newcomers continue to flock to this show.

Based on the novel by Gregory Maguire, WICKED features music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman. The story depicts the unlikely friendship between the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good, a surprising tale that took place long before Dorothy dropped in.

Since opening in 2003, WICKED has been performed in over 100 cities in 15 countries all over the world. It’s also been translated into six languages, has made almost $4.5 BILLION in global sales, and has been seen by nearly 55 million people worldwide. And we musn’t forget: WICKED has received over 100 international awards, including a Grammy and three Tonys. If this show wasn't already on your radar, you may want to add it to your list now.
